Desert Edge Montessori Snack Policy
**Staff must be notified in writing if your child is allergic to any foods**
NO SNACKS OF ANY KIND CONTAINING PEANUTS OR NUTS ARE ALLOWED. ALL SNACKS SHOULD BE STORE BOUGHT AND PREPARED IN A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT
NO CUPCAKES OF ANY KIND ARE ALLOWED.
Students are asked to provide snack for their class about 3-4 times a year. The provision of snacks is done on a rotation, between the students. Our snack policy is to assign each child a snack week. This is an important role in our classrooms and an important role to your child. Student Snack Schedule Assignments are posted on the blog and are posted in the Information Center in the individual classrooms. Families should have plenty of time to prepare for their assignment or switch with another family if they cannot do snack during their assigned time.
Families can provide whatever they want for their students snack week, but should keep in mind that we strongly encourage healthy food choices. Please do not bring crackers or sugary snacks every single day, though these are acceptable to bring for perhaps one day of your students assigned week. Veggies, fruits, (fruit cups) cheese, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, whole grain chips or whole grain breads, and pretzels are all excellent ideas. Snacks should be brought in daily unless otherwise communicated to your students teacher. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be sliced and ready to serve unless you have communicated otherwise with the class teachers. Your child should help prepare this snack and should be able to serve it themselves or with assistance from another friend in the class. The snack provided should feed 24 students whom are in your student’s class.
Students in charge of bringing snack each week are required to bring the cups, napkins and plastic utensils (if applicable) needed for the snack they are providing. Part of our Early Grace Exercises in Practical Life, include helping the students learn how to serve one another, use their manners, wait their turn, etc. As part of this, we include showing students how to properly use a napkin, their utensils, cups, etc. Please keep this in mind and provide napkins (not paper towels), the proper utensils needed (i.e. not plastic forks for applesauce cups), and child sized paper cups, with your provided snack.

**Students who have special dietary preferences may be asked to provide their own daily snack. Those students with allergies are not automatically included in this, but after a meeting between the family and staff (where an individual snack plan will be made), may opt into this.**
